Lindsay Folkman
Faculty
Lindsay Folkman began her dance training at age three and soon embraced a wide variety of genres. While competing in high school division jazz, she led and choreographed her peers, earning top state honors for her first choreographed piece. Since that time she has had a profound love for choreography.
Lindsay began to expand her movement vocabulary at Brigham Young University. She performed and toured with BYU’s International Folk Dance Ensemble from 1996 to 2001. As she danced throughout the United States, French Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, and the British Isles, Lindsay developed natural, expressive styling. She earned various dance department honors, including Dancers’ Choice, Excellence in Teaching, and the Cherrill Brown Liptak Citation (“awarded to one who through dancing will give and receive joy as well as inspire others to dance”). She received her bachelor of arts degree with an emphasis in world dance and modern dance.
After completing her dance education at BYU, Lindsay began freelance choreography for high school competition dance teams; these pieces have been performed and awarded at both state and national levels. From 2001 to 2008 Lindsay coordinated the jazz and tap program at Academy of Ballet, and she introduced Irish and Contemporary dance into the curriculum. She also directed the studio-based Athena Dance Company, where she fine-tuned her choreographic voice by setting approximately 80 original and imaginative pieces.
She has twice been recognized as "Outstanding Choreographer" at Youth America Grand Prix (2013 and 2020); been awarded the "11:00 Award" Judges Choice for her piece "Embrace" at 24Seven Dance Convention (2021); has won several “Judges’ Choice” honors at the Utah Dance Festival (2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017), is a favorite performing ensemble in the Utah Dance Film Festival Awards Gala (2017, 2018, 2019), and is a 9x recipient of Utah's BEST OF STATE medal in Choreography, 2014-2019, 2021-23.

With her extensive training in various genres, Lindsay has created a signature fusion of eclectic and visionary movement. Driven by her belief that
“in teaching, you will learn,” she helps students merge diverse individual style with emotionally charged artistic freedom.
Lindsay is excited to be on staff at Utah Festival Ballet.
